Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''The Angel Wore Red'', released in 1960 and directed by Nunnally Johnson, is a romantic drama set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. Starring Ava Gardner and Dirk Bogarde, the film follows the tumultuous journey of a disillusioned priest and a fiery cabaret dancer as they navigate love, loyalty, and the chaos of war.
Ava Gardner delivers a mesmerizing performance as Soledad, a passionate and independent cabaret dancer caught in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. Gardner's portrayal is both sensual and vulnerable, capturing Soledad's fierce spirit and inner turmoil as she grapples with the complexities of love and survival in a time of upheaval.
Dirk Bogarde shines as Arturo Carrera, a disillusioned priest who finds himself drawn to Soledad's magnetic presence and irrepressible spirit. Bogarde brings depth and complexity to the role, portraying Arturo as a man torn between his vows of faith and his desire for a life of passion and purpose.
Directed by Nunnally Johnson, "The Angel Wore Red" is a visually stunning film that captures the beauty and brutality of war-torn Spain with its evocative cinematography and richly detailed set designs. Through its sweeping landscapes, vivid characters, and stirring musical score, the film immerses viewers in a world of danger and desire, where love and redemption are found in the most unlikely of places.
While "The Angel Wore Red" may not be as well-known as some of Ava Gardner and Dirk Bogarde's other films, it remains a captivating and poignant drama that offers a compelling exploration of love, sacrifice, and the human spirit. Gardner and Bogarde's magnetic performances, coupled with Johnson's sensitive direction, ensure that the film remains a timeless classic of romantic cinema.

About the artist:
Roger Soubie (1898–1984) was born in France and lived in Granville, France after World War II. He began his career by drawing magazine covers and advertising posters for railway companies, car manufacturers, and travel agencies. During his long career as an artist, Soubie created nearly 2,000 film posters, many of which are highly celebrated.
His style is always characterized by lively brushstrokes, attentive to tones, shadows, and transparencies in this wide variety of genres, scenes, and characters. The skin of his actresses, their swathing dresses, look like shining silk designed by a Renaissance painter.
The lines are realistic and traditional: the movie stars are depicted with their distinctive features, almost lifelike, but the composition makes his design genuinely original. Soubie’s protagonists are sometimes centered in the middle of the scene. Other posters may have them inserted in frames or articulated between numerous words and titles with different fonts. Soubie’s movie posters are dynamic. Like an engaging movie, always in motion.
