Description
This image depicts a U.S. Air Force McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II downing a North Vietnamese MiG-21. Piloted by Capt. Dick Coe and RIO Lt. Ken Webb, this 34th TFS - 388 TFW Phantom shot down a MiG over North Vietnam on 5 October 1972. Using one of the then unreliable Sparrow missiles to force the MiG into a closer engagement, Dick Coe's shot managed to hit the MiG while the Phantom pulled heavy Gs to avoid another brace of MiGs. They made it home, but were unsure of the kill until it was confirmed the following day.

Nice Painting. It was nicer that day in 1972.

Wow Dick, I just found that you'd posted about this! I am always humbled when the pilot or crew of a aircraft I have been fortunate enough to depict communicates with me. I wish I'd known what the weather was like before I'd created the art! Thank you sir for all you have done for our country.
