Charming portrait by an unknown American artist of a child, one Martha Bartlett, holding a kitten in her lap, dating from ca. 1860. I love the grumpy expression on the child's too-large-for-her-body face, not to mention the boyish hair-do and dinky buttoned-up bootees. And if you like kittens, this one is definitely up there on the cuteness register. In fact, with its vivid color, flattened perspective and uncertain command of bodily proportion it could almost pass for a David Hockney, which I'm sure Yorkshire's greatest living artist, chain-smoker and gay icon would be in no particular rush to deny.
